New Year Reflection: My Wish for the 2020s

New Year Reflection: My Wish for the 2020s

I wish I could remember what I did to ring in 2010.

It couldn’t have been that exciting; I was only 14 and my mom is a Puerto Rican woman who prefers to be in bed by 8. I was probably home watching New Year’s Rocking Eve and thinking I was “grown enough” to be elsewhere. LOL at our younger selves.

I wasn’t going to write a post to ring in the new year, mostly because I was overwhelmed by how little I felt I’d accomplished. At the forefront of my mind were all of the things I thought I’d do in 2019 and the ways I’d failed to do them. No one is harder on me than me.

But last night I got a text from a former teacher and forever friend that read:

“Yo, awesome decade Melo!! Hope you’re reflecting on it all and looking forward to rocking out in the next 10 years.”

Thank God for my people.

I “fell short” on a few things in 2019. I didn’t write on here like I said I would, I didn’t save enough money, I didn’t master an advanced yoga inversion, and I still can’t do a pull-up… but boy did the 2010s do some damage.

I took my passport from Spanish Harlem to 10+ countries. I played on 16 teams. I endured a disaster of a high school relationship. I met my <3 best friend <3 on the other side. I graduated from Harvard and started medical school. I graduated from Harvard and started medical school. I graduated from Harvard and started medical school.

I can’t believe that ages 15 & 24, Like a G6, and Cardi B shared a decade. TIME. IS. FLYING. Somebody tell her to chill.

Back to my hope for the 2020s…

When I was a little girl I thought of myself as the little engine that could. All of that chugga chugga choo choo stuff got me SO FIRED UP that for months after Ms. Water’s read to my Kindergarten class I’d get into bed, think about my future life, and until I fell asleep… I THINK I CAN. I THINK I CAN. I THINK I CAN.

I wish I was kidding… but I was a total nut.

I want to wish you a happy new year, but more than that I want to wish you a happy decade of thinking you can. 2030 will be here before we know it and I want us both to find ourselves in a place that feels good. Besides… who wouldn’t want to share the 2020s with Megan Thee Stallion?

Cheers to our #hotgirldecade.

All love always xx
